Terms of Service

The service
Shmia is a desktop app that reads on-screen text aloud. Since version 0.6, all speech is generated locally on your computer — your selected text never leaves your machine to be spoken. Optional AI summaries are processed through Shmia's servers.
Free plan
• 30 minutes of total listening per computer, with every feature unlocked.
• Up to 10 AI summaries per month.
• Listening time is measured per computer and doesn't reset by reinstalling.
Shmia Pro — $9.99/month
• Unlimited listening with all voices.
• Up to 40 AI summaries per calendar month (resets on the 1st). This cap keeps the AI service sustainable; unused summaries don't roll over.
• Voice cloning — create voices from your own recordings. Cloning is available only on the Pro plan.
• Cancel anytime from Settings → Plan & Billing; access continues until the end of the billing period.
Voice cloning — consent required
You may only clone your own voice or a voice you have explicit permission to use. Cloning the voice of another person without their consent — including celebrities and public figures — is prohibited, may violate right-of-publicity and AI-replica laws, and is grounds for termination of your plan. Cloned voices are created and stored locally on your computer.
Fair use
Summaries are limited per month as described above. We may adjust limits for abuse, automation, or resale. Subscriptions are billed through Stripe; refunds for the current period are at our discretion.
Privacy
Speech synthesis happens on-device. Summary requests send the selected text to our server for processing and are not stored after the summary is returned. We keep anonymous usage counters (listening minutes, summary counts) keyed to a machine identifier to enforce plan limits.
